Have you ever tried to draw a picture from a photo getting a good result, almost hyperrealistic, but you can feel like something missing, that emphasis and intensity that you see in the drawings of an artist of high level?
To me several times, and the reason lies in the study of the design which is the basis of any form of art from painting to sculpture. You can have a “good eye”, a “good hand” but you can’t ignore the study.
The design features more levels that depart from the sketches to draw more comprehensive features shades, lights and shadows up to the composition.
But let us reflect on the best first step:
The gesture is intended as a movement that identify the movement of the subjetc using simple, smooth and fast lines. This method now that we know under the term ” Sketch ” has the function to guess the movement of the dynamic figure.
We go on the practical:
- First of all, you use a soft pencil as a well sharpened 3B or 4B (but not a rule)
- The pencil must be challenged in this way to influence the hand gesture making it smooth and soft
- The pencil should be tempered in this way to give the opportunity to make stroke thin or thick and gradient
- Sketchbook possibly large size
We are faced with ” Hercules and Lica “, a Colossal Sculpture held on National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome by Antonio Canova, neoclassical artist of 1700. You have pencil and sketchbook on hand.
Where do you start?
We should observe the sculpture and understand the movement of the subject.
Just a few lines to reconstruct the statue. In the first picture “Lica” is just sketched in a few lines and soft: this is the Sketch and Gesture is in the arch of the back .
Another small sketch can be seen in the top right. These designs date back to 1700 A.D. and today is used the same procedure, maybe not on a sheet of paper but on a Graphics Tablet.
Draw provides a lot of practice. Arts in Rome organizes the “Sketch at the Museum” in order to give the opportunity to visit the museums of Rome and play the great works from the Life.
Sit in front of a Statue of Canova and reproduce it from the sketch up to the complete design just as did the great masters.
Life Drawing teaches a lot and also develops the ability to encode the object from three-dimensional to due-dimensional shape.
