Arts in Rome, the Figurative Art School in Rome, proposes for its Members the Course of Alla Prima Portrait. If you find the process of Flemish or Renaissance oil painting too laborious (to understand: the method of Leonardo or Vermeer), based on the progressive overlapping of scrubs, half pastes and veils, you can try to approach the approach of alla prima painting, much practiced by color painters from the mid-nineteenth century onwards and today used a lot in USA and China.
I’ll tell you right away that it’s not that simple, you have to know the design very, very well. This approach has nothing to do with the approach of beginners who throw themselves to steal canvases, after tracing four summary contours, spreading random colors in the hope that something will come out. We must have attended and understood the values of chiaroscuro the color tones, the saturation and therefore also the color theory. We must learn to knead the colors on the palette. For this reason the course will be divided into three trimesters and the drawing will be initially dealt with and only after having mastered it will we continue with the Oil Color.
