Date: 05-07 May 2017
Duration: 3 days – 09:00/18:00

Location: at Arts in Rome, Roma (Italy)
Cuong Nguyen’s Short Bio:
Trained to be a traditional portraitist at the age of 10 in his native Vietnam, Nguyen has achieved recognition in the U.S. for his distinctive pastel technique. Represented by John Pence Gallery in San Francisco, he has taught workshops in and outside the U.S. Cuong earned his PSA Master Pastelist, Master Circle status of IAPS, and Distinguished Pastelist of PSWC .
The Teaching Program:
This workshop will feature a Live Model, and Cuong will demonstrate his own techniques to draw from life using soft pastels and pastel pencils. Students will learn to use an approach that helps them see the big shapes first, and then go into details towards the end of the session.
The first day of the workshop will be an orientation to all materials involved and a complete demonstration of the process of painting the head from a live model. Students will do some exercises on how to apply pastels on sanded paper to create realistic skin-tones.
The remainder of the two-day workshop will continue with instruction on the proportions of the head from basic line to more advanced anatomical study. From there, we will focus on developing a likeness from the model by learning to interpret what we see–simplifying the features and focusing on basic shapes and forms as described by masses of color, plus light and shadow. Demonstrations and individual attention will be emphasized, enabling each student to produce a finished drawing by workshop completion.
This workshop is designed to create a relaxed, informative, yet focused working environment for all skill levels. The core of the lesson will be based on drawing, values, edges, composition and creating life-like skin tone color. Students will focus on the fundamentals of drawing the human head while developing new skills in pastel
Explanation about the workshop on each day:
The first day will focus on learning the basics of Nguyen’s skin-tone technique and creating an effective drawing. Students will start by learning the model’s skin tones and features, doing some exercises to create skin tones by layering colors. After that, Nguyen will begin his own demo, stopping when the basic drawing is completed. He will then assist the students in creating their own drawings as a foundation for the second day of the workshop.
In the second day, students will focus on values and skin tone colors using the green foundation technique. Nguyen will work on his demo side-by-side with the students, assisting the students throughout the class.
At the end of the third day, Nguyen and the students will all finish their work together.
